Create a Word-Edged Easel Card Using Word & Alphabet Dies

Below are the quick & easy steps for how to create a lovely easel card with a word edge to it. You can use word or alphabet dies you may already have in your stash! There’s a video tutorial if you scroll down as well as some alternatives to what I show in the instructions below.

Alternatives

In the earlier example, I showed one way to create this style of card, but there are other options as well.

Alphabet dies – If you have an alphabet die set, you can use the individual letters to cut out your word. The set I used from Spellbinders also includes the shadow layer for each letter, so I used that to cut from my card base (similar to steps 4 and 5). It gives essentially the same look except there will be gaps between each letter.

I find it looks best if you line up the individual dies so they are as close as possible. To prevent the dies from moving and possibly cutting into each other, I line up all the dies and place a strip of masking tape along the back so they are all “attached” to one another.

Sentiment Stamps with Coordinating Die. If you happen to have a sentiment stamp that comes with a coordinating die, that works equally well. It’s essentially the same steps except you will stamp onto the shadow layer instead of placing a die cut of your sentiment.

Tips

  • Take note of where the cutting edge is on your dies. You want to make sure the cutting edge is below the line you drew. More often than not, the cutting edge is not the outside edge of the metal. So just lining up the outside edge below the line doesn’t guarantee the word won’t get cut out entirely.
  • If you don’t like the look of the fold on the front of the card, instead of cutting the word edge out of your card base, you can cut it out of a separate panel cut to the same size of your card front. Instead of folding on your line, you would cut on your line to remove the top portion of your panel, leaving the word-edged panel. Fold your card base where you would have drawn a line and adhere your panel to just the bottom portion of the card base.
