DIY Plaid Using Cardstock

Hi Friends! I’m back again with another Recipe #6 card. This time I’m going to show you how to create your own plaid design from strips of cardstock. This is such a great scrap-buster and a fabulous way to create a fun design! Who needs pattern paper, when you can make your own designs!

Let’s Make This Card

Step 1. Cut 1/8″ and 3/8″ Paper Strips

You can use any colors you like to create your plaid. I don’t even worry about actually measuring these strips.

Step 2. Cut a 1-3/4″ x 5.5″ panel from DCS Ginger Snap and audition your plaid pattern

Along the long edge of the panel, apply a line of dry adhesive tape. Next, lay down your strips horizontally and vertically to determine a pattern that looks good to you. I like to use the same colors in both directions. I also like to mix up the thin & wide strips alternating them.

Step 3. Create your Horizontal Lines

Once you’ve established your pattern, start laying down your strips horizontally. Leave about 1/4″ on left & right edge so you can wrap it around to the back and adhere the ends to the back. When you’re ready, peel off the liner of the adhesive strips on the back of your panel. I like to leave gaps between each strip – alternating between narrow gap and a wide gap.

Step 4. Weave the Vertical strips

Now that you’ve filled your panel top to bottom with horizontal strips, you can start weaving the vertical strips in. The weave is very simple – go under the first horizontal strip then over the next one and repeat all the way down. When you weave the next strip, you want to do the opposite, start over the first strip and then under the second strip. Continue alternating your weaves until you get to the end.

Step 5. Adhere Woven Panel to PopTone Berrylicious Card Base

I used some low profile foam beneath the panel to make it a little more interesting.

Step 6. Layer Your Sentiment

I used a nice large sentiment die but even as bold as it is, it can help to create a shadow layer. Since this die set doesn’t have a shadow die, I just cut it out twice — once from my main color DCS Adobo Orange and once from a darker color – DCS Patriot Blue.

Step 7. Add a Sub Sentiment

I added an extra sentiment, this time in PopTone Berrylicious and DCS Patriot Blue (as the shadow)
