Two Fun Card Sketches!

Have you seen card sketch challenges that were designed for pattern papers and thought to yourself, “I wish I could play along but I don’t really have much pattern paper.” Well, guess what, you don’t need pattern paper! Just play along with your solid color cardstocks! I’m going to show you 2 sketches from Kendra’s Card Challenge #21. But instead of using pattern paper, I’m only going to use colored cardstock and the results are gorgeous!

Let’s Make This

Step 1. Die Cut Your Elements

  • DCS Adobo Orange – 2 A2 Card Bases and a strip that’s 3″ x 7/8″
  • DCS Rubber Ducky – 4″ x 5.25″, 2.75″ circle, 3″ circle
  • DCS Caribbean Blue – 0.5″ x 5.25″ and 0.75″ x 5.25″
  • DCS Tartan Red – 5.25″ x 1.5″
  • DCS Mantis Green – 0.75″ x 1″ (banner flag)
  • Cougar White – 4″ x 5.25″

Step 2. KCC21 – Sketch 13

I used a pre-made A2 card base, but the color matches DCS Adobo Orange. Then I layered the 4″ x 5.25″ Rubber Ducky (yellow) panel first. And then the DCS Tartan Red 1.5″ x 5.25″ strip next. The small banner flag is cut from a bit of scrap of DCS Mantis Green.

These layers basically make up the portions of the sketch that would have otherwise been created with pattern paper.

Step 3. Add Focal Image & Sentiment

I used a bit of low profile foam to give some lift to the focal image and sentiment — both of which are from EZ Cardmaking Kit: Cards For Cubs Printable. And just like that, one sketch is complete!

Step 4. KCC21 – Sketch 15

This sketch doesn’t actually have a lot of pattern paper suggested, so it’s a very easy one to adapt with colored cardstock. In fact, I think it actually looks better w/ the DCS Caribbean Blue strips I cut.

Step 5. Stamp Your Sentiment & Embellish!

The beauty of using colored cardstock is how clean and simple the color blocking is. It really makes the focal images & sentiments shine!
